Launching of the Brunei Darussalam National Judo Federation
2018/4/20
On 15 April marked the Official Launching Ceremony of the Brunei Darussalam National Judo Federation (BDNJF), held at the Indoor Stadium, co-hosted by the BDNJF and the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam, with the support of the Japan Foundation Asia Center and the Kodokan Judo Institute. The Guest of Honour at the event was Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Awang Haji Amer Hamzah bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Zakaria. The event was also attended by members of the Kodokan Judo Institute, the oldest independent judo organisation in the world, and the Japan Foundation.
The BDNJF itself was established this year in response to a visit by the Kodokan Judo Institute and the Japan Foundation Asia Center in May 2017, which was greeted by great enthusiasm from the Bruneian public and led to a substantial increase in the number of people practicing judo.
Following the Official Launching Ceremony, a Judo Seminar was led by Mr Haruki UEMURA, President of the Kodokan Judo Institute and Gold Medalist at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, to commemorate the establishment of the BDNJF.
The seminar was realised under the aegis of the ‘JAPAN-ASEAN JITA-KYOEI PROJECT’, which is promoted by the Japan Foundation Asia Center and the Kodokan Judo Institute. The ‘JAPAN-ASEAN JITA-KYOEI PROJECT’ is a three-year project that supports the promotion of judo in ASEAN countries through human resource development, networking and providing technical advice.
There was also a dinner reception held at the Mulia Hotel after the Judo Seminar, hosted by the Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Mr Motohiko KATO, to celebrate the establishment of the Federation.
The Embassy will continue to support the development of judo in Brunei and hopes that mutual appreciation of the sport will further strengthen the relationship between Brunei and Japan.
