32nd Japanese Speech Contest held on 13 March 2019

The Continuing Education and Training Division, Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE CET), the Language Centre of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam co-organised the 32nd Japanese Speech Contest on Wednesday 13th March 2019 at the School of Aviation, IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus.
The aim of the speech contest is to encourage and provide a platform to participants to showcase their language proficiency and passion for the Japanese language through public speaking. In addition, the event aims to create an opportunity for Brunei students from secondary, sixth form and IBTE to know Japan. The contest was comprised of two categories; the group presentation category and the speech category.
A total of 8 groups participated in the group presentation category and one of the groups, from Sayyidina Umar Al Khattab Secondary School, gave a speech about “Kawaii” which means “cute” in Japanese. They achieved 1st place in this category.
The speech contest was divided into two categories; the beginner category and the advanced category. A total of 9 participants competed in the beginner category and 14 participants competed in the advanced category. Ms Pang Shet Dong gave a speech about goldfish and achieved 1st place in the beginner category, and Ms Wina Sa’adatul Nabillah Binti Awang Wasli, gave a speech about learning Japanese and achieved 1st place in the advanced category.
The main prize, a fight ticket to Japan, was sponsored by All Nippon Airways of Japan (ANA) and the advanced category winner will visit Japan and join a program organised by the Japan Overseas Enterprises Association.
