The 31st Japanese Speech Contest
2018/3/7
The Continuing Education and Training Division of the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE-CET), under the Ministry of Education; the Language Centre of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD); and the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam co-hosted the 31st Japanese Speech Contest on Saturday, 3 March 2018, at the School of Aviation, IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus.
The aim of the speech contest was to encourage and provide a platform to participants to showcase their language proficiency and passion for the Japanese language through public speaking. The event also served as an opportunity to foster closer ties between Brunei and Japan and inspire greater friendship between the people of both countries.
Twelve Bruneian participants took part in the speech contest under the individual speech category: five at the Beginner’s level and seven at the Advanced level. This year, in addition to the individual speech category, a group presentation category was introduced for the first time, to cater to students from secondary schools, sixth form centres and IBTE who have a keen interest in Japan, its language, culture, history and technology. These students were given the opportunity to choose any topic related to Japan and deliver an oral presentation in English, using slides. This year, a total of eight schools participated in the group presentation category.
All prizes and operating expenses were sponsored by the Brunei-Japan Friendship Association (BJFA) and the Japan Foundation, while the main prize, a one-week trip to Japan, was jointly sponsored by All Nippon Airways of Japan (ANA).
