Japanese Culture Festival 2022 (10 - 11 December 2022)

The Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam held the ‘Japanese Culture Festival 2022’ from 10 to 11 December at Times Square Shopping Centre.

The two-day event was open to the public free of charge to introduce traditional and contemporary Japanese culture and lifestyles, as well as promote the Japanese language, through stage performances and booths.

The performances and presentations included Japanese food cooking demonstration by Chef SHIMIZU Fumihiro who is the ambassador’s chef, mochi (rice cake) pounding, a manga competition, J-pop dances and dessert workshops by Chef TSURUOKA Minoru. The booth area will play host to all sorts of games and food, traditional Japanese calligraphy lessons and briefings for Japanese youth exchange programmes.

There was a special appearance by four lecturers from Urasenke Singapore “Tankoukai” to demonstrate an authentic Japanese tea ceremony. Tankoukai are experts who have contributed to the prevalence of Japanese culture by delivering the beauty of Japanese sadou (tea ceremony) as well as the ethics associated with it. Ms NAKABAYASHI Souchoku has engaged in sadou for more than 20 years, and delivered lectures on sadou and serve teas to participants.

The event was held in cooperation with Times Square, the Japan Foundation, the Lifelong Learning Centre of the Ministry of Education, the Brunei Association of Japan Alumni (BAJA), the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Alumni, the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) Alumni (BERSATU) and Brunei Japan Friendship Association (BJFA) University Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and University Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Chapters.
