A brief storyline and some datails about the Japanese Anime movies are as follows:

(1) Princess Arete (105min.)
Confined in the castle tower by her father, Princess Arete spends her days watching the world outside her window. Sometime she sneaks out. Prospective suitors are sent on quests to collect magic treasurers to win he hand in marriage.
The movie was awarded the first “New Century Tokyo International Anime Fair 21” award for excellence in the “Theatrical Release” category.

(2) Miyori in the Sacred Forest (116min.)
Miyori’s parents have gone their separate ways and her preoccupied father is bringing Miyori to live with her grandparents. Miyori is angry about being sent to the countryside when she would rather stay in Tokyo. After Miyori moves to the countryside, that night as she sleeps, a river spirit, Kanoko, slips up to the veranda of the house. Miyori follows it into the woods and meets a group of spirits, who greet her as a long-lost friend. She is dismissive of them, and “Kanoko” is amazed that she is to be the guardian of the forest, succeeding her grandmother. One day, by chance she goes down a forbidden path to a pond where a ghostly woman in white befriends her. From the woman, Miyori learns that the entire region will be flooded by a dam project. This is when Miyori is spurred into action with the spirits from the woods and her school friends to prevent the dam construction plan.
This is one of a number of recent anime films to touch on issues of environmental destruction in Japan

(3) 5 Centimeters per Second (65min.)
Tono Takaki and Sinohara Akari had been apart since they left elementary school, however, they kept in touch through correspondence as they had feelings for each other. One day in winter, Takaki left Tokyo and set off for Tochigi where Akari lives. The train is delayed by heavy snow and he is alone in his carriage, as the time ticks away. Long after the agreed meeting time, the two are finally reunited in a waiting room at a small station.
The movie depicts express changes due to time and distance of men and women who had been attracted to each other and we get to enjoy the visual beauty of the movie, which is a prominent attraction of Director Shinkai’s work.

(4) The Place Promised in Our Early Days (91min.)
Three young classmates become fascinated by the gigantic yet mysterious tower that they see across the Tsugaru Strait, promising that one day they will build and fly an aircraft to the tower to unravel its mystery. However, their project is abandoned after Sayuri’s sudden disappearance. Three years later, Hiroki finds out that Sayuri has been in a coma for the past three years; a state that is somehow linked to the secrets of the UNION tower.
The movie won the 59th Mainichi Film Award in the animation section.
