Four Japanese culinary students from Mie Prefectural Ohka High School visited Brunei from 20  November 2024 under the “Japan-Brunei WASHOKU (Japanese Cuisine) Exchange” of the JENESYS Programme.

They visited Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam to introduce Japanese cuisine to the local students. They also visited the Culinary Department at Laksamana College of Business for an exchange with local culinary students where the Bruneian students introduced local foods to the guest students in turn. They also made a courtesy call on the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Throughout their one-week stay in Brunei, they had opportunity to explore Kampong Ayer, Gadong night market and more to discover the local cuisine and markets, and to experience Bruneian hospitality through homestays. The students also paid a courtesy call to Ambassador Maeda at his office and received a lecture by Chef Shimizu, the personal chef to Ambassador Maeda on his work at the Ambassador’s residence.

The Embassy of Japan thanks Bruneians for their warm hospitality towards the young Japanese visitors and hopes that the programme inspired both Japanese and Bruneian students to explore each other’s food culture more deeply and contributed to strengthening the friendly ties between Japan and Brunei.
