Japanese Culture Festival 2023 (21 - 22 October 2023)

The Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam held the ‘Japanese Culture Festival 2023’ from 21 to 22 October at Times Square Shopping Centre. Ambassador Maeda co-hosted the opening ceremony with the honorable attendance by Yang Mulia Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. Thank you to all the guests for joining the opening ceremony.
 
The two-day event was open to the public free of charge to introduce traditional and contemporary Japanese culture and lifestyles, as well as promote the Japanese language, through stage performances and booths.  
 
The performances and presentations included Japanese food cooking demonstration by Chef SHIMIZU Fumihiro who is the ambassador’s chef, NIHONGO Partners’ traditional dances, a manga competition, J-pop dances, martial arts (judo and karate), Kendama, BERSATU sharing session and Bruneian manga artists’ workshop. The booth area will play host to all sorts of games and food, traditional Japanese calligraphy lessons and briefings for Japanese youth exchange programmes.
 
 There was a special appearance by “HIBIKIYA Singapore”, a Japanese drumming group, at the opening ceremony. The performances delivered featured Japanese instruments including wadaiko, shamisen, and flutes, setting a Japanese festive atmosphere for the Bruneian public to enjoy. 
 
 The event was held in cooperation with Times Square, the Japan Foundation, the Lifelong Learning Centre of the Ministry of Education, the Brunei Association of Japan Alumni (BAJA), the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Alumni, the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) Alumni (BERSATU) and Brunei Japan Friendship Association (BJFA) Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Chapters.
