Conferment Ceremony of “the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun” of the Japanese Government upon Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II of Brunei Darussalam

On 16th August 2023, a ceremony was held at the Residence of the Ambassador of Japan in Brunei Darussalam to confer the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun upon Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam.
Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof has consistently played a significant part in the enhancement of Japan-Brunei bilateral relations, since joining JICA’s Young Leaders Program in Japan in 1992. In 2006, as Director of the Department of International Trade at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam, he contributed to moving forward negotiations of the Japan-Brunei Economic Partnership Agreement. After his appointment as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam in 2008, he led negotiations of a long-term contract to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japan. In September 2018, he assumed the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs II and held many key meetings with his counterparts to deepen further exchanges between the two countries. He also exercised significant leadership on emerging issues when Brunei Darussalam took over the ASEAN chairmanship in 2021.
The Order of the Rising Sun was established in 1875 as Japan’s first decoration, and is a prestigious Order that honours people in Japan and abroad who have made outstanding achievements in various fields of society.
During the ceremony, His Excellency Ambassador Maeda paid tribute and expressed gratitude to Yang Berhormat Dato Erywan for his contribution to the deepening of bilateral relations and exchanges between Japan and Brunei over the last thirty years.
