Port Calls by JS Kashima and JS Setoyuki, Japan Training Squadron, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, at Muara Port, Brunei Darussalam
2021/6/14
From June 6 to 8, 2021, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) “JS KASHIMA” and “JS SETOYUKI” made port calls at Muara Port, Brunei Darussalam. Under the command of Rear Admiral ISHIMAKI Yoshiyasu, Commander of Japan Training Squadron (JTS), approx. 510 personnel including approx. 160 newly commissioned officers were onboard the ships.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the crew did not disembark, however, various events were held online. JMSDF and Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) shared knowledge and future visions based on the warm relationship nurtured through their long history of exchanges.
In the morning of June 7, lectures by both parties were conducted using video conferencing systems. From the JMSDF side, RADM Ishimaki, senior officers and newly commissioned officers participated in the lecture session, and from the RBN, Commander Willie Mathias bin Pandan, Commandant Naval Training, and other officers. From the RBN side, Lieutenant Commander Abu Qusyairi bin Hj Yacob delivered a presentation on topics such as Brunei’s organizational structure of maritime security agencies, RBN’S vision and mission, as well as international engagements with other navies. From the JMSDF side, RADM Ishimaki spoke about the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision", Japan’s basic defense policy and JMSDF’s efforts.
In the afternoon of the same day, Ms. KAKUTA Hiromi, Chargé d'Affaires, a.i., gave a lecture to the newly commissioned officers on the situation in Brunei. The audience asked questions on the relationship between the Japanese imperial family and the Bruneian royal family, as well as business activities of Japanese companies in Brunei, etc., confirming a keen level of interest in Brunei.
On June 8, JS KASHIMA and JS SETOYUKI of JTS and Patrol vessel KDB DARUTTAQWA and Fast Patrol Boat KDB AFIAT of the RBN conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) off the coast of Brunei, in the South China Sea. Through this exercise, which involved real manoeuvers, both parties confirmed one another’s tactical expertise and operational interoperability.
The purpose of the Overseas Training Cruise by the Training Squadron is to develop the newly commissioned officers’ seamanship through a long-term cruise and various trainings at sea, to foster their basic knowledge and skills as well as international perspectives, and to promote friendly relations with port call countries. This year commemorates the 65th time the Overseas Training Cruise has embarked on its voyage since its commencement in 1957.
JS KASHIMA and JS SETOYUKI departed Japan on 26 May for the Overseas Training Cruise. Leaving Brunei on 8 June, they will make port calls at Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and the Philippines, and will finally return to Japan on 21 July.
