JIS Students’ Knowledge of Japan Enriched
As part of a week-long programme of enrichment activities held annually at Jerudong International School (JIS), a group of students and teachers from JIS were hosted by the Japanese Ambassador to Brunei, Her Excellency Ms Noriko Iki, at her official residence on 28 June, to learn first-hand about Japanese culture and customs.
The teacher-led programme, supported by the Japanese Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Dr Toshio Kaneko and First Secretary Ms Junko Kurihara, who personally visited the school to conduct workshops on Origami and Calligraphy, includes a wide range of activities designed to expose the students to the language, culture and customs of Japan, which the participating students all share an interest in.
According to the students, the visit to the Ambassador’s residence was a real highlight of the week’s activities. They were taught how to make traditional Japanese sushi by the Ambassador's expert chef, (Chef Usuki) and observed a Japanese Tea Ceremony by Ms Akiko Katagiri, known as Sado, or, literally, ‘The Way of Tea’, in Japanese. As it is the fasting month and the majority of the participants are Muslim, they took the delicious sushi rolls home with them to share with family members during the breaking of the fast in the evening.
Ambassador Iki said that she was very pleased to welcome the students of JIS and to watch their reactions when they experienced the Tea Ceremony and making traditional sushi.
