On 27th December, “JS URAGA” and “JS HIRADO” of the Japanese Maritime Self- Defense Force conducted a goodwill exercise with the KDB DARULEHSAN Royal Brunei Navy in the surrounding sea in Brunei Darussalam. The two ships later made port calls at Muara Port and were greeted by His Excellency MAEDA Toru, Ambassador-Designate of Japan to Brunei Darussalam. After completion of supplies, the two ships departed for the next destination.

“JS URAGA” and “JS HIRADO” departed from Japan on 12th December for IMED21: Indo-Pacific and Middle East Deployment21 and will make visits to Brunei, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bahrain, and Malaysia, returning to Japan on 31st March. This deployment is aimed at realising a "free and open Indo-Pacific" and the two ships will conduct exercise with respective countries to improve tactical skills, to strengthen cooperation, mutual understanding and trust with each navies, and contribute to peace and stability in the region.

Around 200 crew members joined the cruise under Captain NOGUCHI Yasushi, Commanding Officer of the Deployment.

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the crew did not disembark, and face-to-face exchanges were not conducted. However, during the goodwill exercise implemented at sea, the crew enhanced cooperation based on the high proficiency of our two countries’ navy ships and promoted mutual understanding. Tomorrow, Capt. Noguchi will have an online courtesy call to Captain Khairil bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Fleet commander, Royal Brunei Navy.

Due to the repercussions of Typhoon (Rai), the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force had struggled with arranging a set schedule. However, thanks to the generous support and flexible response from the Ministry of Defence, Royal Brunei Navy, Marine Port Authority as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force were able to conduct training at sea and realize essential supplies for their voyage. In this regard, the visit was a great opportunity to reaffirm the consolidation of trust between our two countries.

This was the second visit by Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ships to Brunei since last June (June 2021), when “JS KASHIMA” and “JS SETOYUKI” made port calls at Muara Port.
