Mr Fumio KISHIDA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, sent a condolence letter
on the recent death of Yang Amat Mulia Pg Setia Negara Pg (Dr) Hj Mohd Yusuf bin Pg Hj Abdul Rahim,
former chief minister and Legislative Council member

On 18 May 2016, Ambassador Madam Noriko Iki handed over the letter of condolences from Mr Fumio KISHIDA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the recent death of Yang Amat Mulia Pg Setia Negara Pg (Dr) Hj Mohd Yusuf bin Pg Hj Abdul Rahim, former chief minister and Legislative Council member, to his son, Pengiran Haji Yura Halim bin Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran (Dr.) Haji Mohd Yusuf.

This special arrangement was conducted due to a special relationship Pengiran Yusuf had not only with Japan as a whole as the former Ambassador of Brunei to Japan, but also with Hiroshima City, which is the hometown of Foreign Minister Kishida. Pengiran Yusuf studied at Hiroshima University in 1945 where he survived the 1945 atomic bombings in Japan. He was conferred with an honorary doctorate from Hiroshima University in 2013 for his role in promoting peace and goodwill between Japan and Brunei Darussalam. Pengiran Yusuf also received Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun from the Government of Japan in 1985.

Hiroshima City is situated in the southwestern part of Japan’s main island of Honshu and it is where the G7 Hiroshima Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held on 10-11 April 2016. At this meeting, the G7 Foreign Ministers issued the Hiroshima Declaration as a strong message on nuclear disarmament.
