THE Japanese
Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Hashimoto Itsuo, yesterday expressed his hope
that more Bruneians will go to Japan for their further studies.
"I would like to see more and more Bruneian students heading for Japan as a
destination for their future studies," he said, adding that a number of
Japanese universities are ranked among the best in the world.
He was speaking during the opening of the Japanese Language and Culture Week at
Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), which is co-organised by the university's
Language Centre and the Embassy of Japan.
This year, three Bruneians, two of whom are UBD graduates, will be enrolling in
Japanese universities for their post-graduate studies in April this year.
In connection to this, the ambassador revealed that a new programme under the
Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) programme
will apply to UBD students who are undertaking Japanese studies.
One UBD student per year for the next five years will have the opportunity to
study Japanese at the Kansai International Centre of the Japan Foundation.
The university is currently undergoing the selection process for this year's
candidate.
The Japan language and culture week is held in support of the government's
effort to nurture close relations between Japan and Brunei, especially in the
fields of language education and culture, and to increase cooperations between
UBD and the Japanese embassy.
To date, the study of Japanese language remains the most popular course in the
centre. Approximately 140 students are enrolled in the current Japanese courses
at UBD.
