AN AWARD has been bestowed on the Bersatu Association (Ship for Southeast
Asian Youth International Brunei Darussalam) on the occasion of the 20th
anniversary of the association.
The Certificate of Commendation recognised Bersatu for its achievements over the years and its role in promoting ties between Japan and Brunei.
The award ceremony was held at the residence of the ambassador of Japan to Brunei, in Kota Batu.
On behalf of the government of Japan, the Japanese ambassador, Hashimoto Itsuo, presented the Bersatu Association with the award.
In a speech, the ambassador said the association had made "tremendous efforts" to promote its objectives. "Bersatu Association has matured and expanded, becoming one of the most positively engaged alumni in Asean member countries," he stated.
According to the ambassador, the Japan-Asean Youth Ship Programme is dedicated to the idea of promoting friendship and understanding between Japan and Asean countries through various exchanges by the youths on-board the ship.
The ambassador also explained the significance of the association in "solidifying" Japan-Brunei ties. "The strenuous work and splendid contribution by each member of the association is really an asset to our bilateral friendly relations," he said.
He said the Bersatu Association was presented the Certificate of Commendation because of initiatives during the exchange programme, where members became host families to youths from Shizuoka. "We are also very much appreciative of Bersatu Association for its active and responsive participation in embassy events, which clearly reflects another aspect of positive contribution of the association to the enhancement of our bilateral relations," he added.
Present to receive the award, on behalf of the association was the president of Bersatu, Hj Jailani Hj Ibrahim.
