THREE
Bruneian students will be travelling to Japan for a student exchange programme,
where the students will have the opportunity to stay with Japanese foster
families and attend high schools.
Under the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth (Jenesys),
the students who are the first batch of students from Brunei to participate in
the one-year programme, will be placed in Japan's different prefectures.
Teo Siang Hoe of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College will be going to Hiroshima
prefecture, while Dk Nurul Hanisah Pg Said from the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan
Science College and Norjalilah Juali of Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School
will be going to Kanagawa and Gifu prefectures respectively.
The three students made a courtesy call to the Japanese Embassy's Charge d'
Affaires Masashi Kono at the embassy in Kiulap yesterday, according to a press
statement from the embassy.
The Jenesys programme was proposed by former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo
Abe last year.
A number of students and youths in Brunei have already visited Japan and
participated in other activities under the Jenesys programme.
Last year, 27 high school students visited Tokyo and Hokkaido for about 10
days.
The programme aims to promote the spirit of "heart-to-heart contact"
and provide opportunities to enhance friendship and understanding among
participating countries and youths.
It is further hoped that more participants will be involved in next year's
programme, the press release added.
The students will be leaving on March 18 and will meet and travel with
Malaysian students together to Japan. The Bruneian students are expected to
return in February 2009.
Other countries participating in the student exchange programme include
Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
