The Winner of the 20th Japanese Speech Contest

is invited to Japan .

The 21st Japanese Speech Contest held at the Chancellor’s Hall in UBD on Sunday August 26th 2007 , thanks to supporters of the events, was a great success.  Aimed at encouraging contestants to give a public demonstration of their competency in Japanese, the speech contest was divided into two categories, Beginner’s Level and Advanced Level.  The Beginner’s Level was set for students who have studied the Japanese language for less than two years.  The Advanced Level was set for those who have studied for more than two years.  Students who have studied for less than two years were also able to participate in the Advanced level if they wanted to.

In total, 18 Japanese language students participated in this year’s contest and delivered their speeches to the gathered audience.  The audience and the judges were very much impressed by the high level of Japanese language proficiency, the interesting contents of the speeches and the good presentation skills of all those who took part.

The 1st prize winner of the Advanced level was Mr Chong Sze Liang, who has been studying Japanese for 3 years at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. He entered at the Advanced level with his speech entitled, “Chinese and I”. His hard work was rewarded with the first prize and a great opportunity to visit Japan , experience Japanese culture and talk to the native speakers in Japanese language.

Each year, in the autumn, the Japan Overseas Enterprises Association invites the winners of Japanese Speech Contests held in ASEAN countries to Japan as a part of its programme of international exchanges.  The Association provides accommodation and bears other related costs and travel in Japan .  The supporting organizations of the speech contest in Brunei Darussalam, All Nippon Airways of Japan, the Japanese Association, and the Japan-Brunei Friendship Association have collaboratively sponsored his return air-ticket to Japan .

Mr Chong Sze Liang is invited to Japan from 21tst to 28th October, when the winners from all ASEAN countries will gather and demonstrate their winning speeches in public. He will also visit several interesting places such as Nikko , Asakusa and Tokyo Disneyland.  The organizing committee of the Japanese speech contest, along with the supporting organizations, sincerely hope that Mr Chong will enjoy a taste of Japan .
